All you need to do is dim the lights, put on the headphones and pick a perfect horror game to suit your taste.

That’s why we’ve prepared the list of the best horror games to save this year’s Halloween. It's time to get down to business and… start getting spooked out! 👻

Amnesia: Rebirth

Release Date: 20 October 2020
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4

With the release of this horror title, the world famous survival horror Amnesia has officially become a game trilogy and it looks like we got a decent continuation. Despite Amnesia: Rebirth being released only a few days ago, it already generated some positive reviews. The game allows us to play the role of a girl who, in order to regain her lost memory, faces numerous obstacles.

The gameplay is similar to what you can experience in the previous parts, meaning that the latest Amnesia is an adventure game based on exploration and puzzle solving. The title is distinguished by the familiar dark atmosphere, while the monsters that cannot be killed raise the stakes even higher. In crucial situations the only salvation is to run away.

Blair Witch

Release Date: 30 August 2019
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

The Krakow-based Bloober Team studio knows a thing or two about creating the right atmosphere as it specializes in horror. Blair Witch is their latest release which is based on a series of iconic horror movies. The players take on the role of a former policeman who decides to find the missing child on his own.

While wandering through the dark forest, the main character is not only haunted by his own fears, but also followed by a powerful witch. The peaceful exploration of gloomy locations will be interrupted with arcade sequences and puzzles from time to time to keep you focused. And, of course, there are also various kinds of scarecrows. 😉

Little Nightmares

Release Date: 28 April 2017
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

Little Nightmares does a great job proving that a game doesn’t need realistic 3D graphics in order to spook out the player. In this unusual 2.5D platformer the sound, the play with lights and its distinctive style play such a crucial role at creating the atmosphere, you may consider them to be the main characters.

Speaking of which, you play for a defenceless little girl who has only a flashlight at her disposal throughout the adventure. You have no chance against the local creatures, thus the only chance for survival is staying unnoticed, while numerous puzzles test dexterity and logical thinking skills.

Release Date: 18 September 2020
Platforms: PC

Those who particularly enjoy coop games should pay real close attention to Phasmophobia. The game is currently in Early Access on Steam, but is already getting excellent ratings from testers. The players' task involves exploring haunted places and collecting evidence of ghosts’ existence.

Not willing to give up their secrets, the supernatural powers will turn more and more dangerous with every minute. This co-op horror does a great job messing up with your head, thanks to the noises that appear at “the best” moment. The game also has a VR mode, which does not require the VR set, but if you have one, we feel both jealous and sorry for you. 🥴 It’s hands down one of the best horror games of this year.

Resident Evil 2

Release Date: 25 January 2019
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One

Remake of the cult 1998 horror game Resident Evil 2 was very warmly received by players. The plot, the atmosphere and key elements of the game remained unchanged, while graphics and camera work were improved dramatically. Especially the camera work as it used to be rigidly suspended in individual locations, while the remake introduced a view from behind the hero's back. In Resident Evil 2, players take on the role of one of the two characters and try to discover the mystery of Raccoon City overrun by zombies.

Resident Evil 3

Release Date: 3 April 2020
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One

Just a year after the premiere of the renewed version of RE2, the fans were surprised with the next remake of the legendary survival horror series. The action of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis takes off at night of the events known from the previous part. Players take on the role of Jill Valentine, who is trying to escape from the destroyed city. Intelligent, powerful mutant Nemesis keeps following the protagonist, leaving no other options but to escape. Due to the limited amount of resources that can be found during exploration, fighting is the last resort.

Release Date: 22 September 2015
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4

Fans of dark science-fiction setting should pay close attention to the SOMA game. Survival horror from Frictional Games studio takes players to a research facility controlled by Artificial Intelligence, which is located at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. The main character, Simon Jarret, must get out of this underwater complex, but quickly realises that it will not be a simple task.

Sounds creepy, doesn’t it? In the dark corners of the station you'll find different types of dangerous monsters which you can’t fight and must hide or run away from. Contrary to typical horror movies, SOMA has an excellent plot that not only evokes a series of mixed emotions, but also makes you think about the game long after you turned off your PC.

The Dark Pictures Anthology

Man of Medan Release Date: 30 August 2019
Little Hope Release Date: 30 October 2020
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One

The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan is the first title in a developing series of horror games from Supermassive Games. The plot unravels as a group of divers discover the wreckage of an American military ship from the Second World War. An idyllic story about a fun trip quickly turns into a nightmare. Inexplicable things start happening on board and the wrong reaction will cost the lives of the companions.

But it’s not just one game now. The Dark Pictures Anthology new game titles Little Hope came out moments ago. This time the action will take place in a small abandoned town controlled by the dark forces of evil. Just like Man of Medan, it’s a choices matter game, thus the decisions made by players will have a huge impact on the character's fates and plot.

Dead by Daylight

Release Date: 14 June 2016
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

Dead by Daylight is an online action game with an asymmetric multiplayer mode and strong horror vibe. One of the players takes on the role of a murderer, who has access to unique skills which he uses to eliminate all other players on the map. The rest of the squad on the server try to survive the encounter with the stalker. To do this they must be inventive, setting traps for their opponents and hiding from them.

In Dead by Daylight, survival is the most important thing. It's worth keeping in the back of your mind that your allies can betray you at any moment as soon as they sense an advantage in it. Therefore, the psychological horror combination with the survival game aspect and gore guarantees fun for you and your friends.

World of Horror

Release Date: 20 February 2020
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch

Inspired by Japanese culture and the works of H.P. Lovecraft, World of Horror is currently in Early Access on Steam. However, 97% of Steam reviews being positive clearly demonstrate that this is a fully playable and polished title. This promising horror takes us to a small Japanese town where dark, sinister powers have awakened.

The gameplay is based on features known from classic adventure games, but the authors managed to add the elements that come straight from roguelike games. Thanks to this design decision, the gameplay looks different each time. And this 1-bit graphics looks both incredibly stylish and creepy.

Are you going to play horror games this Halloween? Will you play them with headphones and switched off lights? 😉
