10 best PC games with female protagonist

The International Women’s Day is right around the corner. Here's 10 best PC games with amazing female protagonist.

Yeah-yeah, the gender of a main character does not determine how good the game is. 🙄 However, we’ve been blessed with huge amount of wonderful games in recent years. Yet, having to play over and over again for a mighty, fearless macho, who finds themselves in an epicentre of exciting adventures and unpredictable plot twists gets awfully boring and bland.

And the industry is responding to the demand. Five years ago, mere 2% of video games had female protagonists, but this number has grown up to 18%, which is great news. To support the trend, we must give acknowledgement and praise to those who create interesting female characters and put them in unique worlds.

The International Women’s Day is right around the corner. For some, it is a time of glorification and cherishing of  womanhood, for some it commemorates the continuing fight for equal rights. This day is a great opportunity to celebrate the games that put women and girls in the leading role with the list of 10 best PC games with female protagonists.

Resident Evil 3

Release Date: 3 April, 2020
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One

It’s true that even the original Resident Evil 3: Nemesis was looked down upon, especially after the masterful Resident Evil 2. CAPCOM was taking time before polishing the formula of the most popular zombie game series, however, looking in retrospect, Resident Evil 3 is mostly guilty of being different. It is more action oriented than the previous game, and the remake manages to elevate all of its strong features, making it a great game.

The renewed Resident Evil 3 now has significantly improved visuals as well as gameplay that is adjusted to modern standards. This makes the adventure of brave Jill Valentine thrilling and fun to participate in. Advance to the new rooms with caution, as you never know where and when the monsters are going to attack. Even the regular zombies present deadly danger.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla

Release Date: 10 November, 2020
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Stadia, Luna

Assassin’s Creed game series has been the quintessence of action adventure for over a decade, and Assassin's Creed Valhalla stands by this claim. “Wait, the main character is a man!” you may exclaim. Technically, the main character could be both male (Eivor) or female (Layla), as Ubisoft stated that both genders are considered to be canon. So, we choose a menacing, badass Norse woman warrior.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla’s open-world surprises its players with absolutely stunning visuals, whether you find yourself gazing at northern lights, Nordic sceneries or English castles. You can expect a smooth, further improved combat system with rewarding stealth mechanics. Moreover, the stamina bar is a great addition which makes combat more challenging as you now can’t abuse rolling to evade attacks.

Tomb Raider

Release Date: 5 March, 2013
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Linux, Shield TV, Stadia

We’re trying to pick less obvious options here. But it’s impossible to imagine the list of the best games with female main characters without one and only Lara Croft. Eight years ago the world witnessed the new version of the Tomb Raider’s adventures. And even in 2021, the trilogy takes breaths away from those who are just discovering it. No wonder, considering the fact that the first game has over 100,000 positive reviews on Steam.

Tomb Raider differentiated itself from previous games not only with outstanding graphics, which still looks pleasant nowadays, but with thought-through setting and story, which keeps progressing and expanding throughout the series. The gameplay pleases with its diversity, as you’ll get the chance to shoot, stealth, parkour, solve puzzles and, of course, explore tombs.

Celeste

Release Date: 25 January, 2018
Platforms: PC, Linux, macOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia

This indie platformer tells the story of a young Madeline. Overwhelmed with her mental health struggles, she takes up the challenge of conquering Celeste Mountain, hoping it’ll hush down her inner demons. It explores the topic of depression in a non-preachy way with masterful gameplay and characters, which gained their charisma through well-written dialogues. The level design is so genius that it does not need an army of minions and complicated controls to make it worth playing.

But don’t be fooled. Easy controls do not equal an easy game, as the gameplay of Celeste reminds of Super Meat Boy. Success is about precision, knowledge and experience.  But don’t worry about running out of your lives. Like in real life, failures are the part of the process and an inevitable element of the path to success. So, instead of punishing you, you respawn and increase your death count.

Horizon: Zero Dawn

PlayStation 4 Release Date: 28 February, 2017
PC Release Date: 7 August 2020
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4

If you’re a fan of action adventures with open worlds, look no further. Horizon: Zero Dawn presents to its players a mesmerizing world overtaken by machines, where humanity is thrown back to ancient times. Brave Aloy, a hunter and an outcast from her tribe, is dedicated to solving the mystery of aggressive animal-like robots and how the rival tribe is connected to it.

All elements, from the setting and plot to gameplay seem familiar, but each of them executed so beautifully, you stop analysing it and just enjoy fluid, dynamic combat, collecting particles for weapon updates and sidequests. And there’s plenty to enjoy in this used-to-be PlayStation exclusive. With Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition you’ll get the base game, The Frozen Wilds expansion, five packs and a digital artbook - all of it for a lower price than a console base game! 🤑

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice

Release Date: 8 August, 2017
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is simply a masterpiece and there’s no other way to put it. Just like a piece of art, it can be misunderstood, especially by people who like only dynamic, linear plotlines, where everything is explained to you. But those who are eager for an exceptional gaming experience can dive deep into the intense, dark world of Senua’s traumatised mind.

You won’t find maps or anything that could give you adequate guidance towards your objectives. Just like Senua, who’s torn by the psychosis, hallucinations and delusions, you will be led by terrifying voices on a quest of bringing her diseased lover to life. But be careful on your journey, as the more you’ll die, the further the curse will spread in your body, eventually forcing you to start over.

Control

Release Date: 27 August 2019
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Luna, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S

Remedy Entertainment continues its conquest of creating striking mystery action games and you can clearly see that in Control. The main character, Jesse Faden, arrives at the Federal Bureau of Control, where weird things start occurring from the doorstep. The game has an unsettling atmosphere and confusing story which, like Christopher Nolan’s movie, reveals its secrets to the attentive audience.

The gameplay of Control can also be referred to as extraordinary. It presents mind-blowing psychic combat abilities, such as throwing objects at enemies as well as just throwing your enemies. The more you update your skills, the more rewarding it is to use them. The destructive environment of the game deserves a special distinction for how it’s incorporated in the combat system.

Dishonored 2

Release Date: 11 November 2016
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One

15 years after the events of marvelous Dishonored, the players are taken to the lively, beautiful coastal city of Karnaca. Emily Kaldwin is once again being stripped off her rightful throne, only this time she’s a playable character, thus can take the matter of vengeance and justice in her own hands. And, boy, you’ll enjoy her journey. The level design is so outstanding that every mission has unique features and obstacles that force you to adapt your playstyle to conditions.

Dishonored 2 is an amazing seaquel of an amazing action adventure game with stealth elements. It grants a high degree of freedom, as there's a wide choice of upgradable abilities, a range of weapons and several ways of clearing each level. You can become the stealth master, who masterfully evades opponents or go full Rambo-mode who uses primarily lethal methods of elimination. Not without the consequences, of course, but you’re free to do it.

Night in the Woods

Release Date: 21 February, 2017
Platforms: PC, macOS, Linux, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

This atmospheric indie game tells the story of a College dropout Mae Borowski, who comes back to her hometown. While trying to reconnect with her high school friends and other townies, she notices that her beloved provincial Possum Springs is in decline, not to mention the fact that some inhabitants are disappearing. Night in the Woods is calm and slow paced, which makes you indulge in the unique atmosphere.

You instantly fall in love with Mae as you can relate to her on so many levels. She ain’t your average heroine who’s sexy, powerful and successful on every step of her life and that’s what charms players. She’s vulnerable, having a hard time accepting the reality and is unsure what to do. In a way, she’s more humane than most female characters in video games. Even though she’s a cat.

The Medium

Release Date: 28 January, 2021
Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X/S

It’s been a long time since we got a great psychological horror. The prayers have been heard, because The Medium does not rely on cheap jumpscares to create a thrill. Instead, it offers grim story, suspense and the atmosphere of dreadfulness. And every aspect of The Medium elevates this atmosphere, including outstanding sound design, starting from noises, soundtrack co-composed by Arkadiusz Reikowski and Akira Yamaoka and voice acting.

The story unravels on the ground of a deserted communist-era vacation resort, where a spirit medium Marianne is looking for a mysterious man named Thomas. Turns out, the place has such a powerful connection to the spirit realm, that it creates dual reality, which becomes a signature gameplay feature, particularly when it comes to solving puzzles.
