3D platformers - 10 best platformers on PC that will put your skill to practice

Easy to learn, but very hard to master. Check out our list of the best 3D platformers.

3D platformers are associated primarily with consoles. That’s a fact. Luckily, you can find plenty of good platformers on PC nowadays. The biggest boom of the genre took place at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, when iconic games like Crash Bandicoot, Rayman, Banjo-Kazooie or Spyro: The Dragon were initially released. Since then the new platformers started springing up like mushrooms. This state of affairs had lasted for several years, then the fuss went away.

The trend for 3D platform games started reemerging in recent years. In addition to some interesting, fresh titles, we also got a lot of remasters and remakes of the classics, as well as intriguing announcements on the horizon. Seems like platformer fans are getting a good couple of years ahead. 😉

The best platformers are waiting for you. In this article you’ll find the best 3D platformers for PC, suitable for both older and younger players.

A Hat in Time

Release Date: October 5, 2017
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

A Hat in Time by the Danish studio Gears for Breakfast is, in a way, a tribute to classic platform games. It’s no brainer to notice that it’s heavily inspired by Banjo-Kazooie, but it’s by no means a drawback.

The gameplay is based on the fact that the protagonist uses a common head accessory in uncommon ways. For example, as a weapon or parachute. In addition to the typical arcade moment, the game features numerous puzzles that test your logic and require the use of the heroine's time manipulation skills.

Asterix & Obelix XXL 2

Initial Release Date: September 30, 2005
Remaster Release Date: 29 November, 2018
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

“All of Gaul is occupied by the Romans… except for one small village, who stubbornly hold out against the invaders.” Our beloved Asterix and Obelix would never let Caesar's soldiers pass. The joy of playing your favourite characters from comics by Goscinny and Uderzo can be experienced again, thanks to this remaster of this three-dimensional platformer from 2005.

The plot of the game revolves around the missing druids. The traces indicate that the solution to the puzzle is hidden somewhere in the Las Vegum amusement park. The production is full of absurd humor, arcade elements and bashing Romans on their helmets. For fans of two brave Gauls is a must-have. 😉

Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time

Release Date: 16 September 2020
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch

Crash is a real legend in the world of videogames. These oldie but goodie platformers with a nice jamray is associated not only with good memories, but also numerous breakdowns and rage quits for many players. The series has been gathering dust for several years, until 2017, when Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy was released by Vicarious Visions.

The remake quickly became popular, so it didn't take much time for the new continuation of the 3D platformer, called Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time. Unfortunately (or fortunately for your nerve system) the gameplay is not as demanding as the iconic predecessors , but the difficulty level is just enough to cause a healthy level of frustration among many players.

It Takes Two

Release Date: 26 March, 2021
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S

It Takes Two, the newest game by Hazelight, the creators of A Way Out, may redefine the developers' approach to the 3D platformer genre. It is not even about the compulsory co-op, but about the attractiveness and dynamics of the game.

It Takes Two puts its protagonists, a married couple on the breach of divorce, in various challenging situations, which are presented through interesting locations full of details. What’s also great is that you need only one copy of the game in order to play with your friend, thanks to the free version of Friend's Pass.

Kao the Kangaroo: Round 2

Initial Release Date: 2003
Re-release Date: 1 June, 2019
Platforms: PC

It’s time for something that’ll hit you hard with nostalgia. Kao the Kangaroo games were initially released in the beginning of the 21st century. The last title from the series came out in 2005, then the brand fell into oblivion. Thus the remake of the second part of the classic platformer was quite shocking.

The main character is an adorable kangaroo who’s trying to save friends kidnapped by a dangerous pirate. What’s even more exciting, it looks like we’ll be getting a new Kao the Kangaroo game, as Tate Multimedia regularly posts new screenshots and shares information about progress. However, the release date still remains unknown.

Initial Release Date: September 30, 2005
Remaster Release Date: 29 November, 2018
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 2, Xbox, Xbox  360

After the initial release, Psychonauts did not become a phenomenon, especially judging by rather low sales. According to experts, the game was way ahead of its time. The title was appreciated a few years later, and now  Psychonauts tops the ranking of the best platformers. Therefore, we’re naturally excited about the sequel, Psychonauts 2, which will be released later this year.

This underappreciated gem tells about the adventures of a boy endowed with paranormal abilities. To save his friends, Raz must enter the minds of various characters and overcome their fears and nightmares. To do this, however, he has to solve many peculiar puzzles and face numerous hostile creatures that wreak havoc in the minds of other people.

Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc

Release Date: 18 March 2003
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox

There’s a saying “time heals all wounds”, but not the one that was inflicted after "See you in Rayman 4" announcement that heralded the continuation of the series. It’s been 18 years since then and we’re still waiting. 🙃 Partially because those who were lucky enough to experience it still have warm memories of a brilliant Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc, its atmosphere and engaging gameplay.

Despite the passage of years, retro looks and wonky camera control, your heart will be skipping beats during the boss fights and exploration of various locations. From the point of game mechanics, the adventures of Rayman still work as a great example to today’s game developers.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated

Release Date: 23 June, 2020
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Google Stadia

Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated is a remake of the 3D platformer from 2003. Just like the famous TV cartoon, the game has no shortage of absurd humor and allows you to play as SpongeBob, Patrick and Sandy who face “notorious” Plankton.

The refreshed version was meticulously made with love to the original and with modern standards of platformers in mind. The puzzles may seem a bit old-fashioned, but the main focus of SpongeBob game is platform elements, which are still well-executed. Due to the moderate level of difficulty, the game is suitable for both older and younger audiences.

Spyro: Reignited Trilogy

Release Date: 13 November, 2018
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

The old platformers had their undeniable charm. No wonder that so many remasters and remakes have appeared in recent years. Spyro: Reignited Trilogy is a pack consisting of three revamped games about the adventures of the little Spyro dragon.  Released in the years 1998-2000, Spyro games laid the foundations for the current standards of the genre, so it’s worth familiarising yourself with the classic.

Especially that it’s practically a recreation from scratch, which stays faithful to the original. Despite the fact that the gameplay is almost too easy to learn, jumping on platforms, solving simple puzzles and fighting with enemies is not boring at all. Spyro: Reignited Trilogy is just ingeniously simple, colourful and charming.

Release Date: 11 April, 2017
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

Anyone who has fond memories of the past, when platformer games used to be the best, you should try out Yooka-Laylee. The developers who once worked on titles such as Donkey Kong Country and Banjo-Kazooie put their minds and talents into creating the game. The very name of the title indicates the source of inspiration 😉

Yooka-Laylee is a more recent, but classic at heart three-dimensional platformer for PC and consoles, telling about the adventures of two protagonists. There are a lot of jumping and simple battles with opponents waiting for players, collectibles scattered around the maps and a well-paced gameplay.

Did you find your favourite 3D platformer on our list? Are you still waiting for the fourth Rayman, have you already come to terms with your loss and filling the void in your heart with other platformers on the PC?
