Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Premiere: 21 March 2019

Platform: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

The first place you’d focus your search for a Soul-like game are the creators of original Dark Souls. And, boy, FromSoftware has got a treat for you in-stock. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has kept the spirit of its ancestor, while improving the formula and offering the players some new perspective. As you play for a shinobi on the quest to protect a young lord, the gameplay is slightly altered to fit the game’s settings.

You rely more on stealth tactics, instead of a traditional opponent’s health bar Sekiro has a posture gague, which requires getting the enemies out of balance in order to deliver a mortal strike. Finally, this refreshed single-player action is wrapped up in apprehensive storytelling with cut-scenes and dialogues, more colourful graphics and mesmerizing setting of 16th century Sengoku Japan.

CODE VEIN

Premiere: 21 March 2019

Platform: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

Some may briefly describe it as an anime version of Dark Souls. However, Code Vein has more to offer than just cool-looking vampires with stylish graphics and epic voice acting (subs rule). You are given the freedom to change your class and weapon as you play to adapt the combat style to different enemies or experimenting until you find your perfect combination.

The treasure of this action JRPG is crazily vast, detailed character customisation which you’ve never seen in other souls-like games. The combat is often so challenging, despite the fact you get an AI sidekick. If you strive for that Souls-like experience and appreciate the anime aesthetics with its occasional sacrifice of realism for coolness, Code Vein is your next destination.

The Surge and The Surge 2

Premiere: 16 May 2017; 24 September 2019

Platform: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

If the Souls-like experience in a post-apocalyptic setting is your cup of tea, but the anime looks isn’t, The Surge might just be for you. Although, it’s harder to focus on its plot and characters, as they do not shine as bright as mech action. Why would you listen to an NPC’s inspirational speech, when after numerous deaths you’re finally performing gore execution finisher? Especially when the gore is so beautifully animated.

You’re not going to read into every single detail of the sci-fi world, when you’re on an adventure exploring this very world and its shortcuts without the help of a traditional map. As for which of these two to pick: it’s hard to tell. Both The Surge and The Surge 2 have similar gameplay, extensive choice of exosuit, the gear for which is craftable. Although, The Surge 2 has slightly more locations and character customisation, which is desired by some, but not that important to others.

Nioh

Premiere: 7 February 2017

Platform: PC, PlayStation 4

This action RPG gives so much content to offer that the nick-name “samurai Dark Souls” doesn’t do it justice. The gameplay of Nioh keeps this souls-like balance of powers, because, despite having lots beneficial features, almost everything around you significantly decreases your chances of staying alive. On one hand, you get an impressive variety of samurai gear and weapons, adorable Guardian Spirits that you can play around with to boost your performance. On the other hand, watch out for often draining stamina level and almighty bosses whose attacks can’t be blocked.

But the sweet loot at the end of the battle is worth all the experiments and frustration. Apart from deep, punishing battle mechanics and numerous quests, you’ll get a vast world map, which saves your completed missions and allows you to replay them. Therefore, you can easily squeeze out dozens if not hundreds of hours out of Nioh.

Mortal Shell

Premiere: 2021

Platform: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

For better or for worse, it seems Mortal Shell is going to be the most obvious love ode to the original Dark Souls. From the dark fantasy setting to the muddy colour palette of the graphics - everything looks very familiar. What’s interesting is that Cold Symmetry’s work in progress has new features that diversify the gameplay, thus giving the much needed fresh learning curve. The combats are extremely frustrating again, even for the hardcore fans of the genre. But when you get the hold of the new mechanics, the outcome is twice more rewarding. And this is the exact feeling that made us fall in love with Dark Souls.

For instance, the replacement of a traditional block with instant solid stone transformation, if timed precisely, can absorb even the most powerful attack and destabilize the enemy’s stance. Instead of a traditional armour, you get the shells, which, in fact, are dead bodies that the main character inhabits and fights in. Upon the lost health, the enemy exhorts you in Hollow Knight fashion, leaving you one more strike away from dying completely and losing your progress.
