Gamer’s life is not a fairytale. The system requirements are constantly growing with new games coming out every month. Today when even fridges have the specs to run The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, many of us, including myself, are stuck with old potato laptops. But I don’t complain too much about mine. It’s a great battlestation… by the 2012 standards.
Nonetheless, there’s nothing to be ashamed about. That’s why we’ve prepared the list of 15 games that guarantee hours of fun and low hardware requirements. Even if the fastest component on your PC is a fan on the processor ^^ You don't need an Intel i9 and a GeForce RTX 2080Ti to belong to PCMR, believe me.
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition
One of GG.deals staff encountered Age of Empires Real-Time Strategy game series in far 2003. Despite the fact that the difficulty level exceeded the capabilities of a teenager, the game captures the player’s attention very well. After the release of Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition (remaster of arguably the best game in the series), it glues you to the monitor like in the good old days. Enough talk, time to conquer more nations!
You don’t have to be a fan of turn-based strategies to enjoy Civilization V. It’s got something special about itself that makes it so hard to stop playing. The game is extremely extensive, thus each session runs differently. Even after investing dozens of hours into Civilization V you can still discover something new.
Designed in the animation style of the 1930’s, Cuphead is a 2D action game which will get blood, toil, tears and sweat out of you, but not out of your PC. You can spend many hours on this game and still have co-op ahead of me! And things don’t get easy when your friend jumps in. Trust us on this one. :/
Darkest Dungeon is a turn-based RPG in dark fantasy setting that’ll chain you to the monitor for… well, according to Steam, I’ve spent 90 hours there! Game devs have provided players with an extensive team management system. But what really distinguishes the work of Red Hook Studios from other RPGs is, among others things, the fact that the characters have to face not only monsters, but also their own fears and phobias. Sometimes darkness can be more of a threat than enemies.
Do not underestimate this indie gem. It may seem like another platform action game with roguelike elements, but here it is, in the list. Your mind will change in no time as you get completely sucked into beautifully illustrated levels and hunt for better weapons. Dead Cells is extremely fun and, thanks to procedural generated mazes, you can play it for months.
It’s one of the most interesting economic strategies we’ve ever encountered. In the game you occupy yourself with factory building and proper management. However, it’s not that easy, as we have to search for the necessary raw materials, constantly optimize production lines, and maintain factory safety. The huge amount of possibilities makes Wube Software’s creation a perfect companion during long nights.
We are dealing with one of the best metroidvania of recent years right here. Hollow Knight will most certainly appeal to all fans of platformers and of the Dark Souls series. Boss battles and exploration of the map full of mysterious worlds were especially mesmerizing. Not to mention that this is a beautiful game with very tasteful graphic design which will not set your video card on fire.
Into the Breach
Into the Breach is a very simple 2D turn-based strategy. But ‘simple’ does not mean ‘boring’ as this title guarantees hours of exciting and challenging gameplay. All because of unusual mechanics, combining the principles of turns and logic games. Each mission can be done in several ways, and the game encourages experimentation.
The list would have been incomplete without Minecraft. Mojang’s game offers endless possibilities that you won’t find in any other game. With the tools available in the game, you can even build a working calculator! Despite Minecraft’s being over 10 years old, it still continues to evolve and stay relevant. Servers are bursting at the seams!
Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire
It’s a must-have for all the fans of classic RPGs in isometric projection. Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is also extremely challenging. It’s actually one of the very few titles that support friendly-fire mechanics thanks to which I had to repeat multiple NPC fights. The main storyline takes over 60 hours, meaning that Obsidian Entertainment still hides many secrets for you to discover on the side.
Out of all games presented in the list, Portal 2 stole our hearts. This unique puzzle game with arcade elements does not have a long campaign, but offers something much better. Thanks to Steam Workshop support, each player can create their map and share it with others. Plus, a lot of missions can be done in co-op mode!
South Park: The Stick of Truth and South Park: The Fractured But Whole
In this case, we are dealing with two RPGs based on popular and highly controversial cartoon South Park. In both of these games you come across absurd, signature “toilet” humor, references to pop culture and social life which enhances the gaming experience. We recommend South Park: The Stick of Truth and South Park: The Fractured But Whole, even if you didn’t like the cartoon.
It’s hard to understand the phenomenon of Stardew Valley for many people. However, it doesn’t stop thousands of people from spending long hours devoted to farm management on my first try. This is a sandbox RPG with elements of economics produced by Eric Baronewith. Apart from the farming, we can fish, mine raw materials, and even go to the dungeons in search of valuable treasures. And now, excuse me... It’s time to harvest! 😉
“No way! This game looks too good. My potato PC won’t even start it!” That might be your initial thought, until the game starts running. As with other survival games, the player's main task is to help the main character to survive and get out of the planet on which he appeared against his will. It’s the setting which makes Subnautica quite unusual... water, water everywhere. Most of the time will be spent exploring the world, collecting resources, manufacturing equipment and vehicles that allow us to venture into increasingly dangerous locations.
Another classic Role-Playing Game which guarantees hours and hours of fun. It’s simple, to the point - explore the world, complete tasks and fight. But the lore, the dark setting and the importance of decision making and its drastic impact on the gameplay differentiates Tyranny from other representatives of the genre.
The article is short, but hours we’ve spent playing those gems are terrifyingly long. No regrets, though! In conclusion, fellow gamers, we’d like to remind you those words of wisdom once again: you do not need to have the latest hardware to play games and enjoy them to the full. Passion and joy that comes with gaming is more important than high specs, resolutions and expensive parts! 🙂
