The history of Telltale Games

The company started its journey in 2004 and was initially known mostly for developing new Sam & Max games. Nonetheless, the real breakthrough happened in 2012, when The Walking Dead came out and became a part of the signature Telltale games list. The now iconic approach to adventure titles’ gameplay began with the previously mentioned game series based on a popular TV series. You could feel the burden of your decisions with every scene, which made people interested in the genre once again. 

This success allowed the studio to acquire several licenses to adapt iconic stories, for example, Game of Thrones, Borderlands, and Fables comic series. The last one became the foundation for The Wolf Among Us, which won over the players with its mature story and stylish design. Later, Telltale titles did not change The Walking Dead formula too much. The studio continuously hired employees up to 2018.

Then, the Telltale games catalog couldn’t get any bigger as the studio went bankrupt. As a result, the majority of its employees lost their jobs the same day. Luckily, the studio’s assets were acquired by LCG Entertainment, and the new-old Telltale returned in 2019. It doesn’t have the former staff and the licenses (including The Walking Dead and Stranger Things), but it still possesses some pre-closure rights. For now, the highlight of the freshly-founded team is announcing The Wolf Among Us 2. The game will (hopefully) come out in 2023. It already received a full trailer, so fingers crossed!

Best Telltale games

One could get to know some of the best Telltale games, although playing only The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us, or Batman: The Telltale Series is enough to see if this gameplay design suits your taste. These titles offer a grim, mature story in stylish, episodic point-and-click format. 

On the other hand, the Sam & Max games mentioned earlier in the article offer a completely different atmosphere. Provided you prefer comedy, this would be a better pick. There’s even a place for Marvel fans with Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series. The game is also filled with humor you may know from the movies – a perfect pick for a difficult day. 

Will games by Telltale bring the studio back to its former glory? We truly believe it’s possible, especially with a series that has the potential as great as The Wolf Among Us has. We will see what the future brings, but for now – you can give some earlier Telltale titles a go. Enjoy browsing!
