Best GOTY Games

A product usually has to be popular to earn itself such an edition. We will try to explain its significance and, as we’re at it, name some of the most outstanding examples of such games.

Difference between GOTY editions and the base games

GOTY editions allow for revisiting a great title or checking it out for the first time – with everything that makes a game so good after its developers worked on it for months. It’s the representation of the best possible version of a title. You don’t need to worry about missing a crucial DLC or two. 

For example, Supergiant Games constantly make Hades better and better, even though it’s been long after release. The number of hours of effort and sheer talent put into the product resulted in being appreciated by gamers around the world.

For a title, the road to featuring at the Game of the Year awards is very long and challenging, not even mention becoming the winner. Still, if developers’ passion is visible at first glance and they do everything to make the game better, there’s a chance to be rewarded. 

Best GOTY games

We can’t tell you what the game of the year 2022 will be (actually, there are some great candidates already), but we can point you toward some of the titles that have already proved their worth. You could start with Fallout 3, as the base game offers hours upon hours of gameplay. Yet it’s the expansions in the GOTY edition that make it even better; not only do you get new exciting scenarios and weapons, but you are also no longer restricted by a relatively low max level. As much as we love this title, expansions are real game-changes here.

If we were to choose something from an actual game of the year list, we would pick God of War. It’s been praised everywhere, but Santa Monica Studio did such a great title that it deserves to be among the greatest video games out there. 

It’s been daring enough to take Kratos, a brutal, scary god, and show another side of him. Here, he’s older and wants to help his son, Atreus. Kratos wants him to understand life and avoid his father's past mistakes. It’s still the good old God of War, speaking of mechanics and gameplay. Plotwise, it’s something much bigger.
