Why are Vikings popular? 

We can clearly see that curiosity for these brave warriors sure seems to have peaked these days: we’ve got a famous TV series, a bunch of (more or less) historically accurate books and, as you may have guessed, great titles like Assassin's Creed Valhalla or the latest God of War instalment that also investigate this fascinating topic. Norse mythology is still a thing that feels a bit unexplored and it’s definitely just as interesting as that of ancient Greeks.

There’s also some beauty in depicting these people as hardened humans, able to withstand most extreme conditions. They’re proud and mighty and it’s not only cool, it’s quite inspiring too. The truth could be slightly different, although we can’t say no to seeing people overcome their boundaries, even if such stories tend to be a little bit unfaithful to the actual image.

Best Viking games

There are many attempts at transferring the epic aura of Viking’s world into a video game and we can happily announce that there are quite a few Viking video games that managed to do that.

Let us introduce the first title that nails the theme: Valheim. Yes, it’s not a misspelled way of writing “Valhalla”, we’re just not there yet in the game. It’s an online TPP survival title that you can play with up to 9 friends. There’s nothing that we haven’t seen earlier, yet the setting and masterful execution are the features that truly sell this game. You will be exploring procedurally generated locations in search of resources to collect, foes to crush, and bosses to defeat. Someone must please Odin, right?

The other fantastic title that you could start your Nordic journey with is Jotun. Similarly to Valheim, it is an indie game. And you also explore a lot, although this time, you’re not trying to “just” impress the Gods. You lost your life in an inglorious manner, and without proving your worth, you won’t enter Valhalla. As far as Vikings games on consoles and PC  go, this is quite a unique take.

Our protagonist, Thora, has to travel through 9 different realms to find and defeat Jotuns, and that’s not an easy task whatsoever: they’re big and really strong. You play the game from the isometric view and engage in a pretty standard yet still very satisfying combat.

What’s more, the game looks stunning with its hand-drawn graphics, sounds heavenly with its mesmerizing soundtrack, and is a pleasure to people who enjoy Vikings in general: you can prepare for a lot of references to Norse mythology.

We could’ve thrown Skyrim in here as well, although a few indie titles instead can’t hurt.
