The history of Paradox Interactive

There is no denying that the company published more titles than it managed to develop, although it doesn’t mean there is nothing to showcase. Almost all Paradox games are strategy titles, yet they still decided to publish management simulators and RPGs, including the madly popular Mount & Blade.

However, the very first success was the first Europa Universalis in 2000. This game was based on a board game and turned out to be a production that carved the path to the company’s recognition. Then, hits began to appear one after another: Hearts of Iron, Crusader Kings, and Victoria. All of these helped the company to build its solid base. 

What’s peculiar is that at some point, it nearly ended up switching from video games to film-making. Luckily, things did not go that way. The thought of not having new games by Paradox is rather grim. After returning to the métier the company knows the best, a.k.a. video game development (and later, publishing), things started to look good once again.

Best Paradox games

The company stated that it wants to develop and publish titles they approve of, even if they are often not the most profitable or trendy. Their major strategy games were created with attention to detail, love, and appreciation for the genre. You can sense this passion in Crusader Kings III, Hearts of Iron IV, and even Stellaris. They all offer different settings and features, but the core ingredient is always there, making it possible for the player to stay in the game for hundreds of hours.

The Paradox games list also includes Surviving Mars, a city builder game set on the Red Planet. Your main goal is to, as you may have guessed, colonize Mars. It sounds a bit basic, but all of the game mechanics are well-designed and logical. There are a lot of problems you need to care of, as you would probably do in a situation like this. Have you ever seen The Martian? Imagine a similar experience, but a bit more complex than what Matt Damon was doing there 😉
