The Brush Traction Type 2, later known as the BR Class 31, were designed to handle a variety of duties, from lower-priority passenger services to freight operations. These versatile locomotives quickly spread across the country, becoming a staple of British Rail. The most common variant, the 31/1, featured steam heating boilers, distinctive headcode displays, and compatibility with other diesel locomotives. Experience the challenge of operating these locomotives, often paired together to overcome their limited power on demanding freight runs.

The Class 31 fleet, consisting of 263 locomotives, were based at depots across England, including Thornaby Depot, where they hauled trains along the Tees Valley Line.
