Why are singleplayer games so popular?

Some would say that the one big plus of playing a video game by yourself is that you don’t feel as rushed as it would normally be with multiplayer titles. Singleplayer games, despite requiring swift action at times, can be replayed. If you mess up a section, you can just go back to it immediately. You could say that it also applies to some online titles, although you can’t deny that your friends probably won’t be as patient in a session of Gears 5 as you are, replaying this one annoying boss in Dark Souls.

Also, it’s possibly the sense of intimacy of sorts that you feel when you’re the only one experiencing the story. Good single player games can often take advantage of that (not to mention horror titles, they are pretty self-explanatory), either by game mechanics or events in a game’s plot.

Just think of how you would feel while playing NieR:Automata with someone else. The world in this game is supposed to make you feel lonely, as bad as it sounds. If you lose this feeling, then the emptiness of a future, sad world of Automata won’t affect you as heavily.

Maybe the aforementioned example isn’t overly exciting, yet there are tons of fun singleplayer games, and it’s never a bad idea to explore some of them. How about we finally take a look at them?

Single-player games list on our site is pretty long, so we'll mention some of the most noteworthy ones from the top of our heads. For some, that is a very safe pick, and, fairly enough, it’s loved by practically everyone who got a chance to play this title. And it is naturally The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. We’re well aware of what happened with Cyberpunk 2077, although no one would objectively state that the plot wasn’t a very big advantage of that title. So it is in the game about Geralt’s adventures.

Gameplaywise, it’s a fairly forgiving RPG with a massive world, hundreds of quests to complete, and taverns to visit. Plotwise, it all comes together for one epic tale about all sorts of things: people and how they live, the emotions that they feel and confront, and the beauty of life in general. This game has a soul which pairs well with the fantastic soundtrack. The fact that it’s packed with little things to do is mind-blowing.

The other video game we should mention is the PC port of God of War. For the PC gamer, it’s pretty much a brand-new title, we know. Meet Kratos, a demigod who had a fair share of problems with Olympus (let’s just say that we want to avoid spoilers) who is now learning to take proper care of his son, Atreus. It’s not an easy job, let us inform you.

Provided you were familiar with the image of Kratos before he embarked on this Nordic adventure, this is quite a shock, frankly speaking. A merciless killer who is now put in dad’s position? There’s something weirdly cathartic about looking at the character development Kratos undergoes: from the person he used to be to someone who can see his flaws and actively tries to teach his “boy” how not to become what he once was. Other than that, it’s a great TPP action game that doesn't forget about the satisfaction of fights from the previous installments in the series.

Next time you’ll feel like giving a one-player title a chance, do the following: pour yourself a cup of tea/coffee/beer, wear your headphones, and let the magic do the rest. You won’t regret it.
