How to Play: A Step-by-Step Guide

1. Join with Your Device: Scan the QR code or enter the room code at outdraw.ai using your mobile device to transform it into your game controller!

2. Select a Secret Prompt: The designated artist picks a prompt from a selection of categories, including objects, actions, and abstract concepts.

3. Time to Draw and Deceive: Then they just gotta draw it! But remember, the aim is to trick the AI image classifier while making sure your friends still get the picture!

4. Everyone Guesses, Including the AI: After the artist is done, all players, including the AI, submit their best guesses based on the drawing. Choose wisely, you only get one chance!

5. Reveal and Triumph (or Try Again!): Discover the true prompt! If the AI correctly identifies the drawing, the AI wins! But if your team successfully deceives the AI and guesses right, humans triumph! It's a battle of wits and creative deviation!

Data Privacy and Consent: Your Drawing, Your Choice

At the end of each game session, players have the option to consent to their drawing being used to potentially train the AI, thereby influencing the game's development. Collection is opt-out by default, and all data without consent will be deleted. By working together, players uncover the biases in large AI models by exposing blind spots in interpreting diverse, culturally specific drawings.

About the Creators: A Passion for Play and Creativity

Deviation Game was developed and self-published by a team of friends, including game designer Tomo Kihara and art-design duo Playfool (Daniel Coppen & Saki Maruyama). Focused on play and artistic intervention, they design tools promoting creativity by engaging with urban spaces and society. Their prior work, How (not) to get hit by a self-driving car, received an Honorary Mention in the S+T+ARTS Prize 2024 at Ars Electronica.

Deviation Game is their first self-published indie game.

Q. How exactly does the AI guess?

A: In each round, the AI submits multiple guesses, depending on the number of participants. If the AI's guesses contain the correct answer, it wins the round.

Q: Doesn’t the AI just have access to all the prompt words? Surely it’s cheating!

A: Not at all! While examples offer context to train it, the AI is forced to rely on its interpretation of the artwork.

Q: What AI model are you using?

A: During Early Access, varied AI models via the service OpenRouter are being tested. We hope, in the future, to provide a feature that allows players to select AI models to fight.

Q: Does the game’s AI get smarter after each game?

A: No, the AI is not learning in real-time. However, future updates will improve it after enough data collection.

Q: How is our drawing data being collected?

A: We only collect explicit consent drawings. Opt in and all data lacking consent will be dropped.
