In the 1980s, British Rail needed to replace its aging fleet of passenger trains, but budget constraints led to the development of two new train types: the 'Sprinter' and the 'Pacer'. The Pacer, designed as a cost-effective, temporary solution, used a bus body mounted on a simplified freight wagon chassis.
The BR Class 142, built with assistance from British Leyland using their 'Leyland National' bus design, became the most widespread of the Pacer variants. A fleet of 96 Class 142s served regional routes from 1985 to 1987, operating in Devon, Cornwall, and the North West.
The Pacer earned a reputation for its bouncy ride and discomfort, particularly on the sharp curves of Cornish branch lines. Despite its shortcomings, this revolutionary diesel multiple unit (DMU) left a lasting mark on the British railway network. Download now and feel it yourself!
