The M2s, primarily built by Budd and General Electric, first entered service in 1973. These stainless steel marvels, adorned with a distinctive red/orange livery and equipped with both third-rail shoes and pantographs, were a common sight on the MTA's New Haven Line. With all axles powered by GE 1259 DC motors, the M2s could carry up to 120 passengers in each car. They were built as "married pairs", serving as the backbone of operations between Grand Central Terminal and New Haven, as well as the New Canaan Branch.
Later joined by the M4s in 1987-88, these new EMUs, constructed by Tokyu Car, shared similarities with the M2s but were configured as "triplets" – three-car sets including a center car without an operating cab. The M2 and M4 EMUs faithfully served the New Haven Line until the arrival of the Kawasaki M8s in 2011, marking the gradual retirement of these veteran electrics. Now you can operate these historic commuter trains.
