A Legacy of Southern Steam

The S15 Class originated with Robert Urie, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London & South Western Railway (LSWR). Designed to tackle heavy freight duties in the 1920s, the S15 evolved from Urie's H15 mixed-traffic design. With demands for express dairy trains and service to south coast ports, Urie adapted the H15 to create a dedicated freight workhorse. The first S15 rolled out in 1920, quickly proving its worth. Become a part of that legacy with this realistic train simulator add-on.

Evolution and Service

Following the amalgamation of LSWR into the Southern Railway, Chief Mechanical Engineer Richard Maunsell further developed the S15 Class, enhancing its capabilities. Based in the Southern Railway’s Western Region, the S15 hauled heavy loads with ease, frequently leading nightly express goods. Despite being designed for freight, it proved highly capable for passenger work, becoming the longest-lasting LSWR 4-6-0 engine in service. Recreate these historic runs in your own virtual railway.

Preserving History

The S15 Class remained in service well into the 1960s, with the last withdrawn in 1966. Thankfully, seven locomotives were saved from scrap, preserving a vital piece of railway history.
