Train Simulator: Experience the DB BR 101 Loco Add-On
The DB BR 101, a hallmark of modern German electric locomotives, arrives in Train Simulator's Pro Range! Developed by Virtual Railroads, this add-on brings to life a true-to-life, expert simulation of this iconic locomotive, steeped in German railway history.
A Locomotive Born of Necessity
In the 1990s, Germany's express passenger routes relied heavily on aging locomotives like the DB BR 103 and DB BR 120. Strained by increasingly heavy loads, these locomotives suffered from poor reliability and rising maintenance costs. A new, high-performance passenger locomotive was urgently needed for the Deutsche Bahn network.
Innovation and Design
Following German reunification, Deutsche Bahn AG (DBAG) sought innovative designs. From over 30 initial bids, ABB Henschel emerged with the Eco2001 concept, a modified DB BR 120 focused on enhanced reliability. This platform ultimately led to the DB BR 101. Production commenced across multiple sites, with final assembly in Poland, and the first DB BR 101 officially entered service in February 1997.
Efficiency and Speed
The DB BR 101 was designed for efficient, high-speed passenger service. Its streamlined design, featuring specially angled front and rear sections, optimizes aerodynamic efficiency while maintaining cost-effectiveness. Built using bogies derived from the ICE series, the 101 was designed for possible future speed modifications, up to 250 km/h.
Across the Deutsche Bahn Network
All 145 locomotives were operational by 1999, running express passenger routes throughout Germany. Notably, they operate the fastest regional service (200 km/h) on the Nuremberg – Munich High Speed Line. Based in Hamburg for maintenance, these locos occasionally visit Nuremberg for major repairs.
A Legacy of Innovation
The DB BR 101 is rooted in groundbreaking electric locomotive designs, sharing a heritage with the popular TRAXX series. This design even influenced locomotives built for New Jersey Transit in the early 2000s, known as the ALP-46 and ALP-46A locomotives.
