During the Kent Coast Electrification Scheme, the increased use of Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) highlighted a problem: limited luggage capacity. The iconic Dover boat trains, ferrying passengers to mainland Europe, struggled to accommodate the sheer volume of luggage. British Rail needed a solution: specialized luggage vans. This DLC lets you experience the operation of this unique type of train and its place in british railway history.

Based on an early Motor Parcels Van (MPV) prototype, the BR Eastleigh Works constructed the Motor Luggage Vans (MLV) in 1959, numbered S68001 and S68002. Crucially, Dover and Folkestone quay lines weren't electrified. The MLVs were therefore fitted with batteries, classifying them as Battery Electric Multiple Units (BEMU). Giving them the ability to maneuver around the locations around the area.

These MLVs could operate for up to half an hour on battery power, enough to haul EMUs onto the quay, unload passengers and luggage, and return to the electrified rails. Eventually, ten of these MLVs were built, capable of 90mph and hauling up to 100 tons. Under TOPS, they became the BR Class 419. Most have thankfully been preserved, showcasing their unique capabilities on heritage railways.
