Its 2-10-0 wheel arrangement emphasized high tractive effort over speed, enabling it to haul up to 1,200 tons on moderate inclines or 600 tons on steeper routes.

As World War II intensified, BR 44 production ramped up, culminating in nearly 2,000 locomotives by 1949. Their sheer numbers made them a ubiquitous sight on heavy freight lines until the advent of diesel and electric traction.
