From 1995-2000, Electro-Motive introduced its robust SD90MAC series, originally envisioned as a 6,000-horsepower leviathan. While initial versions faced challenges, Norfolk Southern recognized their potential. Beginning in 2016, they transformed these locomotives into the formidable SD70ACU classification, a testament to ingenuity and railroading prowess.
The remanufacturing process was extensive, equipping the SD70ACU with EMD 16-cylinder 710G3C power plants (rated between 4,300- and 4,500-horsepower), modern EMD SD70ACe-style cabs, AAR-style control stands, and advanced Mitsubishi electronics. These locomotives are capable of DPU (distributed power unit) operation, enhancing their versatility and power.
From 2016 to 2019, Norfolk Southern added 110 SD70ACU units to its roster, which see widespread use across the sprawling NS system. These burly six-axle diesels became favorites, often serving as helpers on challenging routes like the famed Horseshoe Curve. Now you can recreate that experience in Train Simulator Classic.
