Originally introduced in 1938, the Electro-Motive SW1 was a pioneer in American railroading dieselization, alongside the famous FT freight locomotive. Production of the SW1 continued until 1953, with a total of 661 units manufactured.

The SW1 was the first switcher to employ Electro-Motive’s highly successful 567-series diesel engine. Powered by a six-cylinder version of this two-cycle powerplant, It featured a wheelbase of only 30 feet and an approximate weight of 196,000 lbs.
