Adulting is an immersive interactive visual novel that pulls back the curtain on the complexities, anxieties, and mundane challenges of everyday life. Featuring a unique third-person side-scroller perspective, this single-player experience invites you to step into the lives of three distinct characters navigating the multi-layered definitions of what it actually means to be an adult.

Each environment is populated with meticulously hand-painted assets and fluid 2D character animations, creating a recognizable and cohesive world. Supported by an original atmospheric soundtrack, the game ensures an emotional, thoughtful experience tailored to each character's personal struggle.

Engaging Gameplay and Narrative Choices

Adulting emphasizes deep, character-driven storytelling wrapped in point-and-click mechanics. Throughout the game, you will interact with your environment to uncover hidden narratives and progress through 12 diverse mini-games. Whether you are managing finances, balancing work-life pressures, or navigating social isolation, the linear storylines provide a grounded exploration of adulthood across three different generations.

Experience innovative social features that allow you to capture your thoughts in a digital scrapbook. Send messages to other players, decorate your notes with stickers, and collect "paper planes" as you progress. This allows for a personal, introspective journey that lasts roughly 20–30 minutes, depending on how deeply you engage with the dialogue and mini-game challenges.

Meet the Characters

The game explores the universal struggle of aging through three relatable personas, developed via extensive research in collaboration with the Sigmund Freud Private University Linz:

• Liv (23): A student balancing university pressures, creative ambitions, and financial instability as she tries to gain independence.
• Albert (Mid-40s): A father and business owner struggling to maintain his florist shop while juggling the overwhelming demands of parenting and domestic life.
• Finja (70): A pensioner grappling with the deep, quiet ache of loneliness and the difficulty of staying connected in a fast-paced society.

About the Development

Adulting began as a passionate final master’s project by a dedicated team of students from the University of Applied Sciences Salzburg.
