Following the "Big Four" railway consolidation, the London Midland and Scottish Railway needed a robust freight locomotive. Sir William Stanier answered the call, adapting his successful "Black 5" design into the powerful 2-8-0 LMS Stanier Class 8F. Though not suited for high-speed passenger service, its exceptional tractive effort and power rating of 8 made it ideal for hauling heavy freight across the network.

A staggering 852 LMS 8F locomotives were built between 1935 and 1946, becoming the standard freight locomotive during World War II. They served across the country, even being classified as the LNER O6 by the London and North Eastern Railway. Many were also deployed overseas with the British Expeditionary Force.
