Play Modes

Critterland offers two engaging play modes:

Diverse Critters

Explore a variety of critter types:

• Plants: The foundation of your ecosystem.
• Herbivores: Graze on plants and provide sustenance for carnivores.
• Decomposers: Recycle dead critters, enriching the environment.
• Carnivores: Prey on herbivores and other critters, maintaining balance.

Each critter category—plants, herbivores, decomposers, and carnivores—possesses a distinct set of adaptations. Design each species to offer unique gameplay dynamics. For example, decomposers can consume dead critters, while plants can be upgraded to become carnivorous!

Adaptation is Key

Utilize the Critter builder to select adaptations for individual Critters, then strategically place them on the map. Watch as they spontaneously move and interact, creating emergent ecosystem behaviors. Once you grasp the gameplay dynamics, unleash your creativity in sandbox mode to discover even more bizarre and fascinating ecological equilibria. Critters engage in a food chain where larger critters prey on smaller ones. However, you have the power to disrupt this chain! Give a plant lineage the Carnivorous adaptation to turn the tables on unsuspecting herbivores! As critters digest their meals, they leave behind valuable resources. Design critters that can consume these resources, unlocking incredible synergies. Each critter category (plants, herbivores, and carnivores) features a unique array of adaptations. For example, herbivores can gain the Assertive adaptation, allowing them to fend off predators. Similarly, plants can develop Drifting Seeds, enabling them to reproduce beyond the reach of land-based herbivores. The in-game adaptation wheel offers even more choices and specializations.
