Space simulators bring our dreams of galactic exploration to life – no wonder that these are pretty popular nowadays. We may not be ready for a space odyssey in real life yet, but it doesn’t mean that the gaming industry can’t provide a believable representation of how it could be.
There are A LOT of great space sim titles out there, so you’re spoiled with choice. One of the most splendid and safest options has to be No Man’s Sky. Forget about the disastrous release; with the insane amount of content, it’s totally worth playing in 2022. It offers a massive world begging for exploration, but that’s not all there is to the game. Even though it constitutes a solid sandbox experience, it’s also mixing it with a dose of survival and action-adventure spirit. This fantastic combination of various genres and mechanics turned out to be a big success.
It's a game that wants you to feel the freedom you’ve never felt before (or similar to the one in Breath of the Wild 😉) – whenever you see something far away on the planet you’re wandering through, you can reach it. Yes, it may take some time, but nothing is impossible, and no one is rushing you. Take your time.
You will see forms of life unique to the places you end up and craft tons of equipment needed on your adventure – gather as many resources as you can! Above anything else, enjoy the absolute beauty of exploring the unknown places in this sci-fi game universe.
What are the other best space sims on PC?
How do you even think up a game set outside Earth? There are numerous calculated assumptions and imagined hypotheses that we’re familiar with, thanks to the media and entertainment industries – we will name some of the most notable examples. The other recommendation we have for you is EVERSPACE 2. It’s a space flight simulator with a shooter nature. Think of what Space Invaders would look like if it was released in 2021. Even though it’s still in Early Access, it’s definitely changed for the better.
Initially, it contained roguelike elements, which were then abandoned for the sake of the good old RPG gameplay. You will also do some exploration, but we have to issue a warning. It’s a far more dangerous idea than it is in No Man’s Sky – the enemy is everywhere! On the other hand, the planets we visit may have an essential companion for us; it’s worth looking around and helping others, too!
As we engage in combat, we need to stay focused: the game requires a player to keep up with its insane speed and react whenever a chance arises. You will dodge, roll and get your guns blazing more times than you can count, so be prepared. As for the RPG elements, each spaceship can be upgraded and customized to your liking. If there’s anything that you don’t need, go around the universe in search of merchants – they won’t mind taking some spare parts. After some time, you will have a nice collection to choose from.
We may have included a lot more; in a genre where even a space company simulator is an excellent idea, you may get surprised even after playing a bunch of them. Don’t be scared to discover new horizons with video games – the surprise is more than often pleasant. Feel free to grab something from what we’ve gathered on GG.deals. These are all phenomenal titles to begin your galactic journey with!
Why is Star Citizen so hyped?
We’ve spoken about some of the best PC space simulator games out there, yet this is only a tiny chunk of these games – and Star Citizen is an exceptional title that grew to be a sort of a phenomenon. With the power of CryEngine 3 and a team of passionate folks over at Cloud Imperium Games, it does similar things that No Man’s Sky did before – just on a much bigger scale.
The so-called “Persistent Universe” is an insanely complex multiplayer environment where players can walk around, engage in PvP space battles, do all sorts of missions, and do other things that you would do if you actually would travel through the universe to conduct a full-on space exploration.
Many aspects of the game still need to be polished; players often report that something is still not working or that they found a couple of bugs, but it’s no wonder with a title on such a scale. Nonetheless, it’s an ambitious project that goes well beyond the idea of shooting other ships with your favorite space shuttle.
Star Citizen will probably be in development for a couple more years, and it may even change some of its mechanics along the way. Still, we believe in this project and hope to see the end product that, hopefully, becomes what Chris Roberts and his crew envisioned it to be.
